Question:
I have a 98 Ford F150 truck I'm going to be selling soon. Some electrical systems have failed in the truck, which we have traced to fairly severe wiring harness damage from rodents. (The truck sits in the country for days at a time.) The damage is severe enough to my view that to avoid any misunderstandings, I want the title changed from "clear" (which it is,technically) to "salvage". So where do you do that? State, county, other? Thanks.
Answers:
In Ohio and probably most other states you take it to your title bureau/license bureau and tell them you want it transfered. However, keep in mind, a salvage title will ward off anyone wanting to pull a quick harness swap and resell the vehicle. A main wiring harness swap is NOT that difficult, its just time consuming. You'll be likely to get far less money for the truck with a salvage title as it will have to be inspected etc to be returned to a "rebuilt salvage" status and legally drivable. I'd suggest you consider a notarized "disclaimer" that you and the buyer sign and have notarized at the same time as the title is notarized.
