If its a 2000 SL500 I'd be taking it back to mercedes, it should have a 10 year corrosion waranty or something like that, I'd make use of it, being that you own a newer and VERY EXPENSIVE mercedes they ought to take care of it. If not Naval Jelly will stop the rust, but it will make the area you put it on black, the only real fix is to grind it away and fill and repaint the area or replace the door.How do you get the smell of vomit out of a car?
for a nice car like that i'd take it to a body shop. other than that, if it isn't too deep, at your local hardware and parts store they will have a few products that will eat the rust off, and it's like 5-10 dollars.Drum to disc brake conversion. How much would that cost including parts?

You can never get rid of rust unless you replace the whole panel. Rust is a chemical process that eats at steel once it starts it will not stop. You will have to go to a body shop for them to make mends. But the sooner the better. Also stay out of automatic car washes. They tend to chip cars up where you have your rust problem and in general chip them up.First you need to find out how deep the rust goes. If it is not real deep, then try sanding the paint off with course sandpaper and the applying navel jelly to it. The navel jelly eats up the rust. Afterward, rinse it with water and sand again after it is dry. Get a product called Ospho. It kills the rust and turns it into black primer. Spray it with a couple of good coats of sandable primer and sand it smooth with 800 grit sandpaper and then 1000 grit. If it still has pits in it then repeat the primer/sanding over until the finish comes out smooth. Afterward, apply a sealing primer and then a color coat, followed by a clear coat.

If its not then you need to cut out the bad metal, sand blast it, buy a premade patch or fabricate one, weld it in place, Do the body work with the correct materials, prime with self etching rust inhibiting and a urethane primer, sand, mask off the two panels on either side of the door from the rest of the body, Buff the remaining paint of the door and both panels on either side of it, wash with prep solvent, very lightly scuff the remaining paint with a scuff pad of 1,000 grit, then wash with prep solvent again, tack off with tack rag, paint the repair blending it out a little farther three or four coats after you achieve hiding of the repair area, then clear coat all three panels.
