Question:
i have an old 85 laser ghia and i think the rings are gone in my car. it is heating up and is blowing unbelievable amounts of smoke and it is even idling horribly. i know this car needs major mechanical attention, but i have just had to pay for a lot of medical treatment for my daughter and cannot afford it. can anyone offer any advice that might help me remedy the situation for the moment? i was also told that if i put a really thick oil in it, that would stop some of the smoke, is this true? thanks in advance.

No hon, it will not solve the problem only increase the wear on the cylinder walls. I would phone around and see if their are any training facilities for mechanics like TAFE who would repair your car for free (You would just pay for the parts) as part of their training curriculum. Failing that, try and get it fixed on a payment plan. A lot of mechanical workshops would agree to that if you explain your circumstances. Good luck! and have a good day.Might be something as simple as oil return holes in the head are gunked up. This is just one of many reasons the car will smoke but it's a good place to start looking since it's so simple to fix.

What is the main difference between 5-Speed and 6-Speed manuals?
If it is oil the engine is spent, and thicker oil might help for a whie. White smoke is the head gasket . You say "it is heating up" . rings will not do that.
When cold: remove coolant cap off of radiator. Start car. If you have "Old Faithful" the headgasket is leaking for sure. Sometimes head gasket failures do not do this though.
Depends on the color of the smoke and other symptoms. See reference below.
My 2000 Nissan Sentra's A/C is blowing as cold as it used to.?
it is your piston rings they are worn out and leaking oil... nothing you can do for it now unless you want to spend more on it then what the car is worth. thicker oil might help a little but just prolongs the inevitable time for a new car...Where to buy trunk lid extension?
Do a compression test on the head. You might have a blown head gasket and the smoke is antifreeze steam!! The thicker oil won't help enough to even bother with if it is the rings. Good luck. How much does it cost to replace blacktop two car garage driveway?
The first thing to try is ungunking the engine with Marvel Mystery oil and then doing an oil change. If it still blows smoke you can try usinga slightly high viscosity oil (like Castrol 20W-50).Aside from that, you'll just have to live with it until you can get a new car.
