Don't know. But I can tell you for certain they were still in regular use in the early 1950's. My mom told me of the time when the whole town turned out to see the first diesel engine come through town in Ohio. Maybe there's one still in service somewhere. I can tell you that the Cog Railway at Pinkham Notch on Mount Washington in New Hampshire is a steam engine and I think it still operates 365 days a year carrying passengers.What can I do to keep my car's fan belt from squealing every time it rains?
Steam engines were retired from mainline service by 1959. Some railroads were later than others to go to deisels. There were short-line railroads, factory railroads, etc that ran steam until the late 1960s.
