Question:
The garage mounted new tires on the front end one size smaller than I had on the back. When I put the truck in 4WD for the first time I heard a growling. They have offerd to exchange the tires but the growling is now going to be an issue. I wonder if operating with the odd size tires in 4wd caused this.

putting one size smaller tires is not going to cause an issue...putting 3-4 smaller size definitely would.
You said, "When I put the truck in 4WD for the first time I heard a growling."...do you mean the first time since you got the tires, or the first time since you have owned the vehicle? if it's the second, i'd have to say that maybe you should check the gear oil amount in your front differential, as well as all u joints in the front end and front driveshaft. also, check the fluid level in the t case itself.
