2000 Chevy Prizm problems?!?

Question:
I recently tried starting my 2000 Chevy Prizm, only to have a loud clicking noise come from somewhere from the bottom left of my engine/possibly transmission. We checked the battery, starter, everything works fine and passed the tests at Schucks. My car had only the day before worked fine. I did however check the oil in the engine, and it was almost nonexistent, so in fear of having a seized engine, we tried turning the crankshaft, it turned as it was supposed to, and we added oil to the engine. Transmission fluids and others are fine. So what could possibly be making this metallic clicking sound, that will not allow me to even start my car?? A repair man said something about a neutral safety switch? Does anyone else have a better hint? I am also really low on gas, could that be it?? I don't know why it would make a metallic clicking noise... Thanks!
