I recommend that you ask a repair facility to test both the cat and the sensor. Or you can throw a rear sensor in it and see if that will repair the car. If not then you are going for the cat.
In the long run, it will be less expensive to TEST the components rather than throwing money at the car, and it will be less irritating t the nerves as well.

You either have a V-6 or V-8 engine in your Taurus. This code indicates that there is a problem on the bank of cylinders on the passenger side of engine. It sounds as if a sensor has determined that one or more of your cylinders is not burning efficiently. This could be due to a number of things, from a fouled spark plug to a burnt piston. I would try changing spark plugs and plug wires first to see if that clears the problem.I would first have them clear the light and then drive it and see if the light comes back on..if you get the same code then i would recommend further action...the o2 sensor which is tell the computer that something is wrong, screws into the body of the manifold (exh). which is bolted to the cylinder head..you should have one one each side...Bank 2 is going to be the right side, if FWD...one closest to firewall..
the only way the computer can tell if the catalyst is below efficiency is to measure the O2 sensor readings before and after the converter and compare them against a set value that is stored in the computer to see if the converter is doing its job.
you do not say how many miles are on the car, but that code usually means that the down stream (after the converter) O2 sensor has gone to lunch.
there are (4) O2 sensor's on your vehicle, two for bank 1 and two for bank 2
but be careful, the code could mean that something is wrong with one of the cylinders on bank 2 messing up the equation but I doubt it
