1991 honda accord. the temp gauge is going nuts.?

Question:
the temp gauge goes to mid level just fine when i turn it on for a few minutes but when i drive with the heat on it drops to a low level. it drops down by the C and goes back up to mid level and continues to does this but if i turn off the heat it stays at mid level. it does not go passed the mid level which i find wierd cause it doesnt seem to be overheating. what could be the problem?

Try changing the sending unit, or there is a loose wire on the sending unit.
