Fuel gauge on my 88 f150 only works when its 1/4 or lower?

Question:
what is the problem with my tank. when u fill it it goes all the way past full. like double full then it stays like that till im on like 1/8th or lower then it works. and my rear tank has a hole in it and it is always empty but when u switch it to the rear it keeps running fine and it goes to "double full" again. also my friend said i had the rear tank fills into the front tank or something. i donbt get it can it be explained. thanks. i have a 1988 reg cab long box. 5.0L EFI

I've got an '86 that is similar with only one tank. It's a bad sending unit in the tank.Some of them have the rear tank feed into the front tank line to use less lines.
