When dealing with carburated cars sometimes when the motor starts getting up there in milage it is known for the carb to just go out of tune because of just long use and dirty enviornment. Normally when the engine acts fickle like that and seem to just cut off when it wants to i bet the idle circuits on the carb is getting dirty and gummed up. Try spraying some berryman's chemtool b-12 all over and throughout the carb and then blow it out. See how it acts after that. If it was a fuel pump problem there would be a strong smell of gas and possibly gas in the oil. I hope this helps.Where is the water coming from that is lying on my floorboard when it rains hard?Best answers??
when a manual fuel pump goes bad the diaphragm goes bad and usually leak fuel around it.Not "manual" it is "Mechanical" versus electrical. Manual means operated by hand. Yes the diaphragm is most likely the culprit.

unhook the fuel line at the carb and get a big glass jar and put the end of the fuel line in the jar, unhook the coil wire so the vehicle won't start and have someone crank it over while you watch and see if the pump is putting out steady flow into the glass jar, if not the pump is bad.More Questions & Answers ...
