Screwing or pulling are the main options, but when when unscrewing, you must consider using a hex key/allen key as this is usually the way it is screwed on. Otherwise a hard yank does the trick especially glued versions. Also consider removing the gaiter as sometimes the peugot knobs are screwed on further down.
I am betting on the side nearest the dash - Back, if you put something behind to tires or pull emergency brake, put in down in 1st and look. There might be a little metal line inset into the know. This is actually a staple of sorts to keep it locked in place. Take a pocket knife (best tool) and prise it toward dash. You need to keep up with this to re-install later if you are not upgrading. Should go about 1/4" into the knob.
Can dealership mechanics be trusted?
I don't know if this is the style on your car or not, but I think most gear shifts are installed like that.
