you scare me!...lol!.. there is no fixing a head gasket,, so good thing you decided to get a new one, depending alot on what kind of car you have, it will likely be a set of gaskets to put tha parts together that you have to take apart to get to the head gasket, usualy between 50-$150 tools, again depends on the make of the car ids it forien?, metric tools needed, sockets, wrenches ect. Sweetie you are way over your head no pun intended do you have several thousand dollars worth of tools are you going have the head checked for cracks is the head warped don't forget to torque the head down properly or you will blow another head gasket, I know that you must have a torque wrench right ?
If you don't know enough about it to know what tools you need, seek professional help. A head gasket requires specific torque requirements and you can damage the head if it is improperly removed.

Go to NAPA online and AutoZone online for pricing. Purchase a manual, rent or purchase a torque wrench, and to prevent later problems do not reuse the "old Head Bolts", they do stretch. I need help with my homeschool mechanic stuff...?
the head gasket is just that. A gasket. it cost about 20-40 dollars usd. But that is not your main problem. if you blew your head gasket chances are that you warped your head. You need to remove the head and take it to a machine shop and have it surfaced. You cannot do this by yourself. It will cost 200-500 depending on the machine shop. The problem is, with a waped head, your gasket will never seal properly and the pressure will cause you blow another gasket. Do it correctly and take it to a shop. If you want to save some $ the pull the head yourself and take it to a shop. But a word of warning, you will have to time your engine after you do this. If you do not get the timing dome properly then your pistons and valves will get screwed up and bye bye motor. You can do it, just take your time and follow the Chilton or Haynes shop manual. But take your head to a machine shop. It is crucial.Don't even attempt it.
First you must remove yours ears then your eyes and then the gasket has to be inserted up your nose. The cost of the special tools will be more than what the surgeon/mechanic will charge.
Do you really think you are up to it?

You say to fix it yourself, and the question you asked says your not even a backyard mechanic. There is no doubt I have a lot more tools, a lot more experience working on cars than you and I'd not try it by myself without my mechanic buddy. I'll just say you are in way in over your head.manual or no manual i dont think you're up for the job you didnt say what kind of car or engine size it was and the head has to go to a machine shop or head shop just to be tested and cleaned and for price you can go to autozone and type in your car info but it isnt an easy job for a novice
