Citroen Saxo Temperature Gauge fault?

Question:
Diesel Saxo, Temperature gauge goes from cold to hot three times on starting engine and then rests at cold. Any ideas as to Fault? No reason for failure., haven't touched anything since the car was new (six years old) Coolant ok, fues ok. everything else works fine.

Find out where your temp sensor is,pull of the spade terminal and ground it to earth,if gauge reads max (HOT) sensor needs changing.
