I had the same problem with my firebird a few months ago. Asked my brother (a mechanic) the same question. He said that unfortunately you can't really do anything but replace it, and it's not really safe to drive until you do. Sorry!Rack and pinion steering is a small hydraulic unit that is only replacable, there's not a way to make it work. Unless you've built them for a career, you may not even know which model it is.
Check the power steering belt. A new belt may help until you get it to a garage.

Why do you say it is the steering rack? It is much more likely that it is the ball joints, tie rods, tie red ends, or the power steering pump.1990 toyota pickup fuel pump relay?
If you are right there is no "band-aid" fix. It is a new rack and pinion. All the others are fairly inexpensive compared to a rack.
