Question:
I have a 1998 Dodge Durango, and my temperature gage went into the red area, and the check gages light came on, then the temp gage went back down to normal. On the same day several hours prior, the temp gage started going towards the red but went back down before getting to the red area. What could be causing this?

thermostat. start there. if it continues you might have a head gasket problem.best way to lie about a heater core problem?
Sounds like what you have is a faulty temp sensor. I woul dtake it into a reputable shop and ask them to do an electrical diagnotic on it. It will either be that or a short in the wiring somewhere or it would be that you thermostat is bad or last but not least, it could be that you have a bad fan relay. How do I remove other car paint from my car?
You have a problem with the cooling system. It could be a thermostat sticking, or an indication that you are low on coolant.Take it to a shop you trust and have it checked. You also might have a water pump belt slipping. If this is the case, you may have to have the cooling system repaired. I suggest a complete diagnostic by someone you trust.
If the cooling sytem need repair, do it right the first time. Re-conditioning the radiator, replacement of the water pump, thermostat, belt and hoses will cost a few bucks but you will have many years of worry free reliability. If you have never had the cooling system repaired then it is time.

my 99 taurus is leaking antifreeze what should i do?
Your 1998 might have Dex-Cool, often an orange color coolant. If there is air in the radiator or elsewhere in the engine, this stuff will start to gel up. It makes your coolant gage spike up to red and then quickly drop down.
This is easy to confirm, and you will be doing part of this for the other checks that were suggested. When vehicle cools down, remove the radiator cap. If there is thick nasty sludge all over the spring, you may have this condition. Also if the coolant isn't right up under the cap, it could be happening.
everything in my car works, but it wont start. what is worng?
If so you need to flush the radiator with a acid cleaner designed for this purpose. If it is really bad, you may have to get it done professionally. Some quotes span $200 to $500.
