Why have my reverse and drive on my transmission switched?

Question:
it's an old mazda hatchback, 1994 I believe, when I shift to reverse, it does nothing and when I shift to drive it goes in reverse.

i own a shop ,and i have seen an automatic do this before ,it was something in the valve body that went bad that caused it, but i have never seen a standard shift one do it,if its an automatic,it may have something wrong with the valve body causing this to happen,you can take it by any transmission shop and they,ll look at it for you and not charge you anything for it,that would be one good way to find out for sure whats causing it,good luck with it hope this helps.
