VW Golf Boot not opening!?

As written by Mark T black smoke is fuel related. Black = diesel, blue = oil, so it is highly unlikely to be O-rings. If your O-rings are shot this allows oil to bypass the piston and be burnt, giving out excessive blue smoke and burning oil ie you would notice an increase in the frequency you need to top up the oil (if of course you check it!). Try the air filter then best bet is into a diesel specialist as could be injectors, pump or timing any of which is beyond the inexperienced home mechanic.

Definitely in need of a tune up. Check your air cleaner. It is probably clogged., tire pressures up? Injector or two may have failed and are not spraying a fine mist but are squirting in a solid stream. Has to go to shop.

What's the average lifespan of a car starter?

Before you toss this car aside try some simple steps. Black smoke indicates not enough air getting to the engine. So the first thing you want to do is change the air filter. Loss of power and high fuel consumption go right along with this. If this doesn't correct it you have to go deeper. When was the last time you had the valves adjusted? Loose valves can cause your symptoms. Then check into the injection pump. Poor compression would give you white/blue smoke as would worn rings and bad valve seals.
Good Luck

Sounds like piston rings broken or even a hole in the crown of a piston.

it's possible on this engine for the e.g.r [exhaust gas recirulation] valve to get stuck open thus causing the engine to draw in to many exhaust gases [black smoke] that would be my frist check before removing injectors or checking pump timing
