Air Flow for a Diesel Engine?

Question:
I have an 84 Chevy Pickup with the GM 6.2 Diesel Engine. The engine came out of a salvage yard, and It is not quite as good at the one that was in it before. I know they say every little bit helps, and I was considering getting a K&N Filter, because I have seen it demonstrated how much more air flow they allow. My question is: Does the increased air flow help with engine performance on a diesel engine? I have been told that change in the air flow will in NO way help a diesel run better, this seems inaccurate, but I want educated opinions. Before, i got 18-20 mpg on the highway, with this engine I only get about 14-15. I don't expect it to make ALL the difference in the world, but will it allow my engine to run and operate smoother and get marginaly better fuel economy? Please, I am thinking a K&N Filter would help, but i dont wanna spend $60 on a filter if it will make no difference.

I use to do diesel mechanic work in a previous life. Here's the hard facts. Yes it will boost your HP by a small percentage. Anybody that tells you that it won't doesn't know how a turbo works on a diesel. As for the mileage being increased that too will will have a small percentage of increase. More air flow in any combustable engine burns the the fuel being delivered to each cyclinder more effectively. The manufactures of the various high performance filters make claims that are from their test shops in next to perfect conditions. Altitude and tempeture may vary your actual results compared to what they claim.

What Is The Best Spray On Truck Bed Liner?

You can get better performance if you can get a cold air intake installed. Filter helps a bit but start to deteriorate as the engine gets warmer and warm air surrounds the filter. If you are on a budget, you can try and experiment rigging up PVC pipes to pick up cold air from the bottom of the car and bring it to the filter inlets. You should feel the difference right away
