Question:
I have a 1996 land rover discovery sd. Recently while driving the check engine light came on and stayed on. The would go out somtime for awhile but then come back on. I had just purchase the car and had to get it inspected. When i went to inspection they failed me for emission. They gave me the error code P0441. Do any know what this code mean and if this is a expensive problem. The idle also spike when the car is cold but once it warms up the spiking stops. Do any know what i can do and what exactly is going on with my car

Where is the thermostat on a 1999 Chevy Malibu?
I own a shop, and do computer work on all vehicles. The code PO441 is: Evaporative Emission Control System, Incorrect Purge Flow. First lets look at what this may or may not mean. The evaporative system collects the fumes off the fuel inside the gas tank, so they don't escape into the air, and burns them. If the gas cap is not sealing off properly then the vapors escape rather than returning to the engine to be burned. The purge part means there is a switch/valve in the line that comes from the tank to the charcoal filter, and to the intake on the engine. When the switch/valve is activated, it will pull the fumes to the engine to burn, or when not activated it sends the fumes to the charcoal filter to clean the vapors. The most common cause of this is simple, "A loose or leaking gas cap". The next common cause is over filling the fuel tank. When filling the tank, the pump will click off when it is full, and requires no more fuel be pumped into the tank. Some people have a tendency to keep pumping in order to get all the fuel in the tank they can get in it. "Never" do this! When the tank is full, and you keep pumping in more fuel, you will send raw fuel up the purge line, into the switch/valve, and the charcoal filter, causing the charcoal filter to become saturated with fuel. The purge valve will activate when you first start the vehicle, thus it sucks more fuel out of the charcoal filter, and the engine receives more fuel than it can handle, thus the engine may stumble, or the idle will spike due to too much fuel, and not enough air. These problems are in fact related, and not that expensive to repair, but the down side is; you must order the charcoal filter from a dealer, and sometimes replace the purge switch/valve. In some cases you may have to replace the O-2 sensor due to a build up on it. Let go long enough, and the catalistic converter may become clogged also. Using a scan tool the code must be cleared out, before the light will stay off. A faulty gas cap will also do this by not letting the purge system work, because there is not enough pressure build up in the tank to push the fumes to the charcoal filter, and purge valve/switch. The only other thing that comes to mind is the line that goes from the tank to the charcoal filter may be off, cracked, broken, or mashed closed.Glad to help out, good luck!

P0441 - Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge FlowTHere have been several blogs about this problem. Could be the fuel cap but I am not sure. See the links for more answers on this code.
