i have a 95 mitsubishi eclipse rs. about 2k miles ago, water pump failed and i had to drive it a couple of miles in that situation before reaching the repair shop, so the car was out of timing when i arrived there. the mechanics could fix it but the engine has been shaking when it's running at the idle since then. my mechanics told it's because the valve(s) hit the piston(s) when it was running out of timing. some other guy told it may be a damaged/failed injector. is there any way to understand the real cause of shaking and to fix it?

Had a 94, if the pump failed this would not cause the timing to go off, it would cause the engine to run hot and the head made of Aluminum to warp, would cause a drop valve which will make the engine idle with a shake, also replace the timing belt too.

Maybe your timing belt slipped timing, but you could not drive the car if it had broken completely. And if the car was driveable, it does not seem that it should have incurred engine damage due to the slipped timing. So they installed a new timing belt and water pump at the same time, I assume. I would take the car to another shop and get a second opinion on the rough idle problem.Check your oil to see if you have water mixed in with it.If you run a car too long and it has a cooling problem you could run a risk of damaging the head gaskets this could also cause a car to rough idle.

You got bent valves most likely buddy. The mechanics should never have taken your money for repairs unless they were going to fix it properly. A bent valve from jumped engine timing is EASILY diagnosed with the proper tools and knowledge. You need to have the cylinder head removed and repaired. There is no way around it and it is expensive for that make and model's engine. Figure 11 hours labor @ $60 an hour replacing at most 8 valves @ $27 each plus gaskets/seals and misc other parts - $900+ -AllData labor guide. Or you could find a good used cylinder head and just pay labor to put it on.That is one of the worst engines to bend valves on especially if you can't do the work yourself (I had the same car and my timing jumped, I did the work myself and it still cost me a lot). Also the timing pulleys on that car tend to fail so you might want to replace them too. Too bad you don't live near Stuart Florida, I'd check it out for you just because I hate to see when a person trusts a mechanic who is clueless about a specific make and model but will still take their money. I won't touch a car I know nothing about, and to then not consult a service manual?
