Question:
ok i want to attempt to do either job by myself. but how much would a used engine cost. how much would it cost to have someone put it in. i have a 99 grand am gt its a 6 cylinder and the cheapest price i could find to have a head gasket fixed was 1200 i dont have that kind of money, so if getting a used engine is cheaper and possibly the cost of labor to have it put in is cheaper then i will go with that option! thanks!

Installed a 96 dohc ,was a 98 sohc,it wont run now ,what will make it run ?
Get a book and do it yourself youll save money and learn somethingUsed as in rebuilt or from a salvage yard? Rebuilt not going to be cheaper, salvage yard full of question marks and not a whole lot cheaper anyway. If you have some idea of the condition of the rest of the engine then replacing the gasket yourself is the way to go.
the other thing toconsider is; if you get one from a salvage yard to have a shop install, they wil take no responsibility for its condition and give you no kind of warrenty.
What is the correct weight of oil to put in a 59AB flathead Ford engine?
Hi tina, sorry we scared you...changing head gaskets really are a bear, even experienced mechanics sometimes have problems with it.Ok, used engines can have their risks too, but often are a good source. Prices will vary somewhat, but usually you can find good ones for around $600 to $800...finding someone to do the swap can be daunting, but if you are persistent, there are people out there who have enough equipment to do it for you...even some shops will get an engine for you and put it in.
How can I clean the haze on my headlight's plastic?
The drawback would be, once you get all that done, you've spent about the same amount. So, it is back to that hard decision...which way are you going to feel more comfortable with...
If you are going to insist on doing the job yourself Tina, and you have checked the oil in this engine to make sure it isn't all milky, AND the engine runs well now, buy a Haynes manual and read it carefully. Those manuals are based upon complete engine teardowns, so you can see what is involved...the head gasket(s) may be what you want to try. Good luck, you will definitely need it...
