I own a 1990 Chevy silverado 1500 with the 350 motor. Just today my brake light came on on my dash and it blinks 9 times and a slight pause on the 10th then repeats. My brothers pickup does the same thing and his is a 91 i think. My brakes work fine and the ebrake isnt engaged at all. Does anyone have a reason or cause to this? It kind of makes me nervous driving it with it on. My truck had a minor issue when i drove it this morning, the check engine light came on, then the brake light and then the spedometer went to 0 so i didnt know how fast i was going. I pulled over and sat there for a minute, then when i pulled back out the spedometer worked again then the brake light started to flash 9 times quick and a pause on the 10th, about a minute later my engine light kicked off. but the brake light continues. I think shes burning oil like crazy tho because i could smell burnt oil so ill have to get that checked out today. Any one know the reason for the brakel light please write back

there is a problem with the anti-lock brake system on the truck. This truck probably only has the RWAL, rear wheel anti lock. The light is flashing a code 9, speed sensor open circuit. This explains why the speedo wasn't working. you could have a problem with the wiring that goes from the cluster to the speed sensor, a faulty cluster, a faulty speed sensor, a faulty DRAC module(digital ratio adapter controller). I think if you disconnect the battery for 10 secs, the light should go off or you may have to pull the brake fuse. As long as the speedo keeps working, the brakes will work nomally, just without any anti-lock operation. it sounds like the electrics are misbehaving, probably a short somewhere, making connections randomly. Can you test connections/ circuits?Best thing to clean and protect leather in SUV.?
The flashing you describe, seems like the truck's computer is trying to relay an error signal to you. This would also explain why the check engine light comes on. With cars before 1996, a flashing dash light is often how computer error codes were relayed. So in your case the first number of the code would be 9 and the second number would be how many other times it flashed after the pause. I would recommend either trying to find a GM OBDI reader or taking it to a mechanic and having the trouble codes scanned.Symptoms of a bad trasmission?
Either a system error relay message, or you're low on brake fluid. Check fluid and recheck parking brake to make sure it's not engaged, if the problem doesn't go away, take it to a shop and have someone scan it with a diagnostics scanner. Usually it costs 50-75 bucks to have it scanned, but ask if they'll apply that fee to any repairs you might have done. Usually a shop will apply at least half of it.Good luck

two things I can think of, short in speed sensor for ABS, or possibly (with you saying your speedometer zeroped out) an open circuit at the instrument cluster connection. There is a diagnostic connector at which you can check the codes yourself, (check your library for a chilton or haynes repair manual), but unless you know what you are doing, you should probably take it to a good shop. It will help, however to Know what you're talking about when you get ther as many shop love a person who says "I don't know whats wrong please help me" (translation: please rip me off and help me empty my bank account).The first answer is the right one
