Check engine soon light no stored codes?

Question:
Lately in the morning my Check engine soon light flickers and flashes and gets dim and then bright. But every time i check for codes jumping the terminals on the diagnostic connector I get nothing. This is on a 1985 Buick Riviera with the 5.0L 307. I also get not to good gas mileage about 12mpg. So what could my problem be? Is the ecu shot?

Answers:

why am i not getting any spark?

First clean and verify all your ECM (ecu) grounds. What you are describing is a classic loose ground situation.
It is also possible, but not probable, the the MEMCAL (the chip) in the ECM has failed.
Gas mileage is probably related to 2 different issues. First, when was the last time the oxygen was replaced?
Second, and probable, the mixture control solenoid on the "computerized" quadrajet, (quadrapotty) carb needs to have the terminals cleaned and the resistance checked across the terminals. Anything over 25 or so OHMS is bad. The MCS also has an external adjustment. Not to mention the lean/rich adjustment screw in the air horn. It could also be a reality that it's time to replace the carb. Bushing wear, vacuum leaks, etc.
If the car is cherry and you "love it", I would seriously consider putting a throttle body injection unit On it. About a $1500.00 bolt on conversion from Holly or Edlebrock. See the Summit catalog.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

does anybody know where i can find quater panels for a 1988 chevy monte carlo ss?

I'm assuming here you have already checked all filters, fluids, and ignition system to include timing. If so, start with a fuel pressure check, then O2 sensor. This should lead you into the right diagnosis. Also, if you haven't already purchase a good manual.

my car starts but cuts off immediately after any suggestions?

Bad gas.. wet maybe? service engine soon on an 85 could mean a lot of things. Could be a sensor .... as for the Gas mileage I wouldn't assume the two are connected.

What do bearings on a scooter do?

I'm gonna say O2 sensor...basically not reading enough/not getting enough oxygen...

I am assuming you are jumping the terminals properly, double check your procedure to be sure. Then I want to know, does your car do anything out of the ordinary when the light is flashing? If it runs fine, and the light still does this, it may be that your alternator is going out. My Dad's ole riviera did this and had it checked out, they did a load test on the battery, and alternator, then found that the alternator wasn't charging properly. I don't know if this is your problem, but you should check it out.

smoke out of the defroster vents?

if that light comes on there is a code.

Chevy Trailblazer transmission question?

if you go to read it and there is no code, it means it was reset, either by a short or dead battery.
