It varies from shop to shop so ask first before they do any work.I would recommend bringing a guy friend who knows cars and have him drop it off and pick it up with you also.

The reason I ask this is: If they are having a problem with the way the car runs, or if they asked because the check engine lamp is on, 90% of the time it isn't because they need a tune up.
If they want scheduled maintenance, I ask to see their owners manual, the schedule is printed in there.
