I have a 1996 Ford windstar that is fuel injected, last week when it got cold it wouldnt start, so we had it towed in to be repaired. The tow truck driver, and the mechanic both then told me when its super cold out to lightly step on the gas, less than half way, when starting it. My step dad is insisting that they have know clue what they are talking about because all I will do is flood it. Please help...for at least peace of mind!

Stepping on the gas to the floor sometimes works IF you are not getting fuel to the motor, but this will flood the engine, then you are really stuck as you will have to wait for the engine to unflood which sucks when it is cold. I have rarely seen this work. More likely than not, your battery is shot. Take the car to a local auto place and have the batterry tested in the car. It will tell if there are enough cold cranking amps to start your car when it's cold. Fuel injection works in sync with an onboard computer which adjusts the mixture of air/fuel to obtain optimal combustion.So it really doesn't matter if you pump the gas pedal or not. All you might end up doing is flood the cylinders with Fuel.Check your batt, check the plugs. That should sort out the problem. :)I would suggest that you leave the accelerator pedal alone to start the car. If the car is having problems starting it is a sign that you may need a tune up or other repairs.
The e.c.m. determines, through various sensors, how much fuel and air is needed to start the vehicle and monitors the entire process. The e.c.m. knows what the temperature is, the position of the accelerator pedal, the speed at which the engine is cranking, etc. and will adjust (within reason) what needs to happen to start your car. Outside those parameters, the indication would be that you need someone qualified to diagnose the problem.

Well, you can park your van indoors, and/or put a block heater on it which warms the oil and makes starting easier. Other than that, with a new battery, nothing else will matter.
