i just had my motor rebuilt on my 1991 caprice classic . before the mechanic started i asked him to check to make sure their were no other major problems.he said no. because if their were any other problems i was just going to buy another car instead of repairing the caprice. i had my motor replaced, as soon as i picked my car up it jerked when i changed gears i asked the mechanic about it he said it's afast car thats why it does that, my check engine light came on and i took my caprice back to the shop , the mechanic told me i needed a torque converter. he knew i needed one before i had my car repaired, he just wanted my twenty-six hundred dollars for replacing the motor. he said the torque converter will cost me four-hundred dollars. can i take him to court for misleading me?

Is the car idling fast when you put it in gear? If so thats why the jerk is there. The check engine light is probably comming on because of the jerk that did the engine job. I dont think the transmission in a 91 will have any affect on the check engine light, its electrical related to the engine.sadly no, but you can report him to the BBB. I am a mechanic myself, and not everything will show up in diagnosis, expecially if there is a mojor problem occuring (ie, needing an engine rebuild). I wouldn't hold it against him. I would ask him if there was a reason why he didn't mention it before and see if he knows the answer or if he really has to think about it. If he knows the answer right off the bat without thinking of it, chances are he is telling the truth and it didn't show up on the ignital diagnoses. If he takes a long time to respond chances are he is lying. Talk to him and see if since you just had a major repair bill, if they can cut you a deal or not. But i would hear him out comptley first. Not everything comes out on the first diagnoses, and a torque converter can be a hard thing to diagnosis.

i own a repair shop,and you might can win this one,but you know whats going to happen he,s probably going to say it was good at the time he replaced the engine,and he probably will get away with it also,that's what gives mechanics a bad name ,is stuff like this ,and your transmission wasn't supposed to shift like that either,but I'm sure you realize this by now,but id try bluffing him,you might can get him to cover this cost,if he thinks you might take him to court over it,sometimes it works,i have never had that problem before,but i know plenty of mechanics who have had it,good luck,i hope you do good on this one.Probably not the converter anyway. Take it to a trans expert. A lot of mechanics are good but trans are different animals and require a different type of mechanic or someone who took the time to be good at both.
