Question:
I have a 1969 Chevy Impala Convertible and I was upgrading my suspension. I have completed the rear suspension of my car, which consists of 2 rear coil springs and 2 rear shock absorbers. Now, the front suspension is giving me some trouble, I already have the front suspension taken apart. Both front coil springs and shock absorbers are already out of the car and I have my car up safely on jackstands. I am having trouble getting my springs back in their pockets as my new springs are about 3-4 inches taller than my old ones. I know it would be harder to get them in, but even when I tried putting my old ones back in I was still having some trouble. I fully compressed the old spring with a compressor and got it back in between the frame rail and the lower a-arm pocket, but everytime I think Im going to get the lower a-arm jacked up to the spindle to lock it in place, the car begins to lift up. Can I drive my car to the shop,15 blocks away, with no front springs so they can reinstall them?

How do you remove rust from swing chain. it has large links?
Here is how to get the springs back in. Get one of the compressors that fits inside the spring, after compressing the spring with the 2 outside compressors, take the nut off and one side off the single compressor, then fit it through the spring, on the side the nut came off of, slip the bolt through the upper shock mount hole and tighten it down with the nut.Can you make the plastic on your quad look new?
Now remove the outside spring compressors, and tighten up the inside spring compressor till the lower arm can be jacked to where the spring sets in place. Then put the front end parts back togather, and slowly back off the pressure on the spring, and the compressor will slide out the bottom controll arm, then you just put the shock in.
I do it like this on my 68 an 69 GTO's, which should work on the Impala. Make sure you have someone with you to help watch everything. It is actually very dangerous to do if you don't pay full attention.
i dont think it would too much of a problem as long as you dont have to go too fast and dont hit many bumps along the way
If your street is smoothe and go slow enough to not cause any serious weight movement wich would cause the heavy front end to buckle then you would be in serious trouble. But i would just call a tow truck
yeah, you can drive it, but the ride will be painful for you and the car.
How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?
perhaps NOT fully compressing the spring, compressing it only 3/4...1/2 or so will help.
I need to no how to wire a coil on a mitsubishi space wagon?
Your car will scrape over the road if you do.Is your car in a garage? Then put a post between your car and the ceiling then you will be able to install your old springs and maybe even your new ones.
Take your old springs and cut part of them off just enough so you can install them, at least your frame wont scrape along the road.
yes u can drive your car for about a mile and, do no damage to your front suspension but u have to make sure u hit no bumps and pot holes or you might break your axle and will also affect your motor mounts...that will really bust your balls so i suggest you really be careful and if its a stick transmission make sure u dont try to use your breaks, down shift to slow down..so you wouldnt put pressure in the front end
If I drop my truck how wide of a wheel and tire can I fit on my truck?
Not to be a smart ***, but do you happen to belong to AAA? They will tow it there for free if you do . (even if a family member or buddy is, let them call AAA)I'm doing the same thing to my 72 Cutlass...I would be scared to death to drive W/O springs in case it would bottom out.Difference in automotive headlamps converversion kits?
I just redid my 73 Cutlass w/big block, the car has to be very high off the ground, stands need to be fully extended, and I used no compressors to get them in,my lower a arm was unbolted, and my springs were about a 1/2 inch taller than the old ones,if the size changed, you might have the wrong ones!Does anyone know where the low pressure point for the air con...?
How stupid are some of you people? Are you trying to kill someone? I would NOT even think about driving a car with no front springs to my front gate, let alone 15 blocks. Listen to pyledriver.a 69 impala?,i dont think i would want to do that.hey man thats a classic!,fix it up,dont tear it up.it would be pretty hard on the front end.
