how do i activate the check engine light codes on a 97 ford escort?
I agree with Stuart - check the pistons & rings. If it has been through a lot of water, it may be that the water got into the cylinders, and the con-rods have been damaged by trying to compress it.
The reason the larger (1.6 and 1.8) K-series engines have head-gasket problems is often due to the cylinder linings moving.
Most engines have dry liners (including 1.1 and 1.4 K-series engines), but these have semi-wet linings that can move or occasionally distort, causing problems with sealing at the head gasket. It is possible they could cause other problems too, such as poor piston-ring sealing. Trying to compress water in the engine could have caused a problem with these liners.
