When I fill my car with petrol, the pump keeps clicking like it does when the tank is full. I have to keep pressing the lever down over and over until I am topped up. I've only recently bought it second hand, and filled it up for the 2nd time today, where upon I had this problem again. The pump won't allow the tank to overflow - the petrol does stop when the car is full, but it's annoying having to repeatedly press the lever down. Apart from this, the car works fine. Could an air pocket in the tank be to blame? When I removed the petrol cap, there was a rush of air. Thanks to anyone that can help.

The way gas pumps work is, there is a back pressure valve in the handle. The valve is very sensitive, so if the filler neck in your car is small, it's easier to back pressure. Sorry, but that is just the way they work.Car loan - blown engine? 2000 Dodge Intrepid?

the gas stops because the tank IS full. what you are doing is topping off the tank. if you are continuously using the car after filling up, it doesnt hurt, but if you top off the tank and then park it, the gasoline may expand and leak out of either the tank or possibly bust a rubber line due to it getting hot and expanding in the tank. if you fill the tank until the lever trips, don't keep adding fuel, just add enough to get you rto a nice number such as from $23.08 to $23.25 and stop. it's an easy to reme,mber amount, and doesn't cause you to overfill your tank.Why does my new 650 cfm carb starve itself at 4,000 rpm?
Don't worry just yet, have you filled up at different petrol stations? I always get that with my car at Tescos.Try other places before you resign to the idea there's something wrong with your car. I find some places fill up quicker, some take a lot longer than others at the start n everything, they all seem to be different! x

You really shouldn't top off the tank, but stop when it's full. That's how it's designed to work. Fill it, perhaps a wee bit more to get to an even number, and then stop.its only splash back in the neck of the tank, dont worry about it, i have the same problem with my escort just try turning the pump handle or dont put it all the way in the neck.

I always have this problem at tesco,nowhere elseOK this is just a guess. I get the feeling you have bought a french car possibly a peugeot 306. They were the worst for this. It is caused by the angle of the filler pipe into the tank. The best way to solve this is to partly draw the filler nozzle out of the tank about half way and push the handle nearer the car. So that the handle is nearer the body work of the car. The pump keeps cutting out because the nozzle has a very sensitive back pressure nozzle to stop fuel from spilling out all over the petrol station forecourt, which might cause a very nasty fire. If this doent work try changing the nozzel position as you fill up till you find a position that doesn't cause the gun to cut off
