Sounds like there is a problem with the idle speed control circuit. Your boyfriend need to check the small rubber hoses under the air filter box to see that they are all still in place and not damaged.If they are all OK unfortunately you will need to take the car down to the local garage to have the idle speed control valve checked out/replaced.
Please get this sorted out as soon as possible as if the engine stalls when he is approaching a roundabout for example, he will loose his power steering and power assist brakes resulting in a high probability of crashing.

It could be a vacuum leak, quite common actually...look all around the engine compartment, find all the little rubber hoses, trace them to both ends. Any brittle, split or broken hose needs to be replaced.I have put too much oil in my car and white smoke is coming out of the exhaust is it safe to drive?

My first guess here would be that cheap gas has caused buildup on the throttle body butterfly valve and it needs cleaning because it sticks shut or open at idle and interrupts proper fuel mixture and delivery. Also F (fix) O (or) R (repair) D (daily).

I assume this is a petrol engine, and if so then his first checks should be of the vacuum pipes which supply the various components under the bonnet. They should all be secure and in good condition.
