How much does it cost to fix the gas gauge?

the gas gauge on a 95, olds cutlass ciera is broken how much does that cost to fix. the gauge never goes below the half tank mark but at the same time it rises beyond the full mark when full

i own a repair shop,and its the sending unit in the tank that's bad they,ll charge around 200 for this one because it has to have the gas tank dropped down on it to get to it ,and that's not an easy job to do,before you take it to them run it down sort of low it makes it easier to get the tank off and on, 5 gallons of gas in a gas tank sloshing around makes it impossible to be able to get it down safely,but that's whats causing this,and there is a good possibility it can be the gage its self,but not very often do you see one of those go bad,good luck hope this helps.

I agree with Dodge Man. It definitely sounds like the sender. Not the most difficult job in the world, but not that easy either, especially at the DIY level if you've not done one before.

If you decide to tackle it yourself, take the time to drain the tank. It's difficult enough to balance that tank while your laying on your back with it empty . . . having fuel in there makes it much harder.
