Lately the engine has been making a weird flapping and creaking sound. I have had the car almost two years and never heard it before.

95 eclipse, engine's shaking when it's running at the idle?

A mechanic looked at the engine and suggested getting the tensioner assembly replaced. He also suggested replacing the stretched accelerator cable because the car has trouble maintaining specific speed. Is there a connection or just a coincidence?

Blown brake fuse?

We had the assembly fixed but not yet the cable. Now the car sounds worse than before and cuts off whenever we stop the car. After restarting it, it cuts off again once the gear is switched to drive. Now we are told to replace the idler pulley and maybe the water pump, but the water pump was just replaced in August 2006! What are you thoughts? Any suggestions?

Agree, Find a better mechanic, Most mechanics just swap parts until the problem is gone. These are the mechanics that will wind up making your savings account the national debt. try to find someone ASE certified, and ask other people who they wold recommend. A good mechanic will test parts and replace as needed, as opposed to just swap and see.
