you use chocks in case your brakes fail. if you were to inadvertantly break the hydraulic break line (long shot but possible) on the wheel you are changing the brake will fail on the diagonally opposite tyre as well (there are two brake 'circuits' each one controlling diagonally opposite wheels, think of an X).What kind of 12V battery is best for a camper to run a few accesories now and then.?
you also place it diagonally to the tyre you are changing because of the weight you are lifting when you use the jack is being redistributed more so to that tyre than any other. More weight = more friction and less chance of slippage.
I'd also reccomend placing the spare under the car near the tyre as you are jacking up, and place the flat tyre in the same place when you switch tyres, just in case the jack fails or the car somehow moves, the car won't crush you if you have some part of your body underneath it.

Even with the emergency brake on, with a wheel off the ground there's always a chance that the car will shift a little as you are performing a tire change...for instance as you loosen or tighten the wheel lug-nuts etc. Chocking the tires helps prevent that from happening.just in case of brake failure..
Why does my Girlfriend think the car runs on tap water.?
Just in case when you are parked on a slope. Just a safety precaution, placed the wheelchoke against any of the working wheel against the slope. You may locked up the rear wheels by your parking brake. However, if it is wet/slippery road surface and on a slope your car may just slide! Prevention is better than cure!

For manual transmission car, you may want to shift to 1st gear so that the engine is helping you to brake your driving wheels too!
