95 Ford Escort Transmission problem?

Question:
no matter what gear i put transmission into it will only go forward even in park and i do not believe it is the linkage because i am looking under the hood and watching it shift can anyone tell me what the problem could be?

you have a 4EAT-F tranmission. if it is only going forward in any gear range there is one thing that causes this. transmission failure. usually caused by a forward clutch back being burnt up and the clutch and steels welded together. thus requiring a rebuild. take it to a transmission shop or your mechanic and have them do a full check on it. find out what a rebuild cost or a salvage yard unit will run... sorry about the bad news.
