What's the catalyst function?

Question:
I've just had my MOT and I passed it but the mechanic said to me I need to keep my eye on the catalyst in my 1996 Escort as it has collapsed. It did pass the test, but it needs to be changed. What's the main function of this item, how urgent is the repair (around £180 :-/), and how much does the collapsed cat. influence my car's performance?

If you cut open a catalytic converter, it looks like a big honeycomb inside. If that material is collapsing, it can reduce exhaust flow causing a loss of power and economy, and if it get bad enough, your engine will stop running because the exhaust will be completely blocked off. Your car would not run until you get a new catalytic converter. The main function of the converter is to reduce harmful exhaust emissions. The catalysts used in a converter are rhodium, platinum, palladium, and more recently also cerium. These chemicals start a reaction of your exhaust gases to convert CO (carbon monoxide) into CO2 (carbon dioxide). Harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOX) is also being controlled by these catalysts. If your converter is collapsing, it may be time to think about getting a new one. Also, it is not unusual for a catalytic converter to last the life of the vehicle, so you may want to ask your mechanic why the catalyst is collapsing. Hope this helps.

Its function is to convert really nasty gases into not-so nasty gases.
Wait until next year and see if it passes the mot again, if not buy it then.

Right on Bandit - it converts Carbon monoxide into Carbon Dioxide (as well as emitting harmful particles of Platinum, Iridium and tungsten).
