I have just checked oil on my 1997 vauxhall astra 1.6 8v to find cap covered in cream gunk,is this terminal?

Question:

How petrol car engine works?

i had an astra 1.6 it was a little older than yours but i had the same thing with mine its like coffee ice cream (dont eat it, it tastes yuk) i am in the motor trade and have freinds who work at vauxhall and they told me it can be common in older astras because the top of the engine is designed to run colder than the bottom it can sometimes cause condensation to form in the rocker cover this mixes with the oil and it becomes emulsified, it doesn't require the head gasket to be replaced but if it is left it will clog the oil ways and may cause other problems, i would recomend an oil change inc filter and ask for the engine to get oil cleaner through it first (this cleans out all the oil ways) and get your rocker cover breather cleaned too cos it gets in there also. good luck

It sounds as though your head gasket has gone.

Change the cylinder head gasket. Flush and renew the engine oil. Flush and renew the coolant. It should be fine.

2000 Ford Taurus lighting problem?

not necessarily.there is always a certain degree of emulsification-cream gunk present as a by product of combustion. However in an old engine which is well worn this becomes excessive. If the engine doesnt use water and oil heavily dont worry about .Check that the engine breather is not blocked

Rough Idle on 2003 Grand Am GT, 3.6?

not all the time does a mixture of oil and water mean you have a head gasket problem. some engines draw moisture for some unknown reason, be it through the pcv system or just a bad oil cap seal. to be sure thou befor you start the engine up the next day check the oil and look to see if it appears to be the same way. once the engine has been started it mixs it all up again and wont tell u much. if your still in doubt however, have a compression test done on the engine to see if you have a blown headgasket to make you feel at ease.

Can a strut on your car Actually Break?

Head gasket or cracked block possibly

Electric cooling fan?

is condensation!,if car is mostly used for short trips this will happen becaise oil doesnt get hot enough to boil off the moisture that occurs as engine cools, change oil more often if this is the case as the water isnt very friendly to machined surfaces

91 dodgewill not fire 1&4 injector tan wire will not light a diode light, replace computor 5 times ,check wire

if it is just showing on the oil cap it could be nothing but condensate and nothing to worry about.if it is showing on the dipstick and the cap..then head gasket, cracked head, cracked block .if it is showing on the dipstick don't run it any more before fixing it or it will destroy your engine if it has not already.

Head gasket question?

This is not terminal but it is a blown head gasket. There is water in your oil and it will destroy the bearings inside the engine if you drive it any more than up a driveway. You should have the head removed, milled flat, new gasket, replace head torque down head bolts/studs, set valve clearances, flush engine lubrication, new oil.

Spark plugs; how often?

Also find cause of blown gasket -probably overheating, possible water pump failure, though that mainly affects the 1.4 litre Astra. Diesel versions of these are prone to head gasket failure, but not petrol. Check that your fan is working properly and that the radiator is clean.

Water is getting into your oil. Most likely a head gasket (hopefully that's it and not worse).

Hi

Major car repair you cant afford?

If you are only doing short journeys in your car then the deposits could be due to the build up of condensation which does not get boiled away as it would on long journeys.

I want a cd player in my 96 cavalier?

Clean out the rocker cover, change the oil and filter, and keep an eye on things such as coolant, which will deplete quite quickly if the head gasket is the problem.

Take your car for a good long run to get it nice and hot at least twice a week and see if the deposits return.

I will say that if it is an ECOTEC engine then they do have a taste for head gaskets, but lets not condemn it just yet.

What happens if you preform an oil change on a vehicle using synthetic oil and you use regular motor oil?

Geordie

Lug studs?

It is normally an indication that the head gasket is leaking water into the engine oil. However this is normally associated with a high temperature reading on the temp gauge.
It could be possible that the car has not been serviced for a very long time and that the oil has gummed up.
Try and oil change with a engine flush and see if this solves your problem.
If it turns out that it is a head gasket, budget for about £100 to £150 for the repair.
