Take all the necessary precautions as mentioned, but I'd recommend the product AquaKlean for cleaning...a great automotive cleaner & degreaser that'll get the job done.

98 Chevy Cavalier Issues?

If you going to wash it yourself make sure you cover the electrical components with plastic bags and wrap them with tape so the fluids dont get in. Also cover the alternater and distributor as well. Use engine degreaser and hose off with a weak to medium stream of pressure not a heavy pressure.

Where is the battery located on a mercedes a140 car?

Go to a local Wal-mart or anything like that, buy a can of engine degreaser and with the engine not running, spray it down and wait for around 10 minutes, if I remember right. Then, spray it down with a hose that has a fine spray setting. Try to avoid getting water into the engine block through the oil fill cap, and you should do fine. I don't recommend this, however if you have any type of oil leak or transmission leak.

My car failed smog because the NO was to high. Is this because the catylitic converter is shot?

Yes home and a garden hose is much better than using the high pressure at a car wash if you are unsure of what you are doing. High pressure may force water into electrical connections and components that need to stay dry. Get a can or two of degreaser from your local auto parts store, spray it on the engine and if possible scrub the oil soiled areas with a nylon brush, spray on more degreaser then run engine until it starts to warm (Not hot) Let degreaser sit a bit to work on the soil then hose off. If possible cover the alternator with plastic wrap, as well as any other electrical components possible, for the most part they are to hard to wrap or get at just a very light rinse in these areas is all that is needed no need to drench them for minutes. Rinse engine off with a hose. If you have an air compressor dry everything as much as possible to include the plug ports, in either case start the car and run it awhile, take a drive to let the engine heat etc. dry things out. There will be some squeeling from the belt and steam as well as odor comming off the engine for a bit. If you have a faulty plug wire, etc and the car will not start right away wait a bit for things to dry. I clean my engine bays every spring and have done hundereds of others that I've worked on. Engine runs cooler, leaks are easier to spot. Note what looks like a big oil leak on many of todays engines is actually oil that has made a mess from removing the oil filter, some of these filters are not in the best spot. Once the engine is clean you will be able to tell if oil is from a leak or the filter being removed during oil changes. Many engines have been ruined by novices, auto detailers using very high pressure and steam cleaning engines. These methods should only be done by pro's that know exactly what needs to be protected or stay dry.

Of course you can wash your engine at home. Just be sure to protect your air filter from water, then spray the whole area with engine cleaner and hose it off.

Tach install in 98 s-10 with 2.2?

Simple Green 50/50 mix. But first a few pointers. Cover your alternator with a plastic bag and cover the bag with an old rag. Cover your coil pack(s) or distributor cap the same way. With the engine cold, spray the 50/50 mix all over the engine bay, inner fender, fire wall, back side of the radiator, top of the motor and then both sides. allow it to sit over night if you can, but if that's not possible then for an hour will be good. Don't worry about grease stains because the Simple Green dissolve it all. Don't use a garden hose to rinse off the degreaser, use a 2 gallon type lawn/garden pump sprayer to get the gunk off. It can get more gunk off with less water.
You may have to rinse it twice but its worth it.. Soak up any remaining water under the hood and remove the plastic bags and rags.Start your car and allow it to run till normal operating temperature Your belts may squeak for a little while but it should go away after a few minutes. Simple Green is safe on all surfaces so it wont stain or oxidize any metal or plastic under the hood.
