Question:
I started thinking a few weeks back that there was a light rumbling sound coming, so i thought, from the wheels - i assumed the wheel bearings were going. Now the noise is louder- its linked to the gearbox, clutch or transmission. If i am moving, take the car out of gear the noise goes. If i then press the clutch, select a gear (say 4th) and slowly release the clutch (say doing 40 mph) the rumbling noise returns. If i kep the car in gear then depress the clutch and release the noise dissapears and comes back.

will my power train warranty cover my saabs rotors?
Almost certainly your thrust bearing. It's an annoyance that will eventually be a problem. But my dad's car (a Mitsubishi) has had a whining thrust bearing for 2 years and it's still driving fine, even carries 7 hundred weight of load once a week without complaint. An Alfa won't last that long, but you'll be fine for at least a year or until it becomes extremely loud to the point you cannot travel at 70MPH for long before it drives you mad.
When you repair it you will need a new gearbox, but I wouldn't bother just yet.

I MAY BE WRONG BUT SOUNDS LIKE THE THRUST BEARING TO ME. IF YOU ARE STATIONARY IN NEUTRAL WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING IS THE NOISE THERE WITH THE CLUTCH PEDAL UP AND IT STOPS WHEN YOU PRESS THE CLUTCH PEDL DOWN ? IF SO I'D SAY THE THRUST BEARING HAS GONE. HOPE THIS HELPS.IF YOU HAVE IT FIXED YOU MAY AS WELL HAVE A COMPLETE NEW CLUTCH FITTED WHILE IT'S APART.
GOOD LUCK STEVE.
hi.. The sound must be of gear bearings... go and replace the bearings.. or it might be the case of gear shrft....

In a situation like this I would consult an expert car mechanic, get the benefit of their advice, ascertain what parts they would think was needed then send my husband to the auto parts shop down town and get him to fit the parts. I would make him cups of hot tea to assist him. It usually works a treat. Its a car...live with it.
How do I bring back the color on my cadillac's vinyl top?
Sounds very much like gearbox , have you tried to see if the gearbox oil is up to the level userly should be level with the filler plugHi,
Well, it seems like a transmission problem
I love the Alfa Spider, but have heard of tales concerning the gearbox.
I came across one a bit back, with the same issue.
It grumbled on and on when driving, but fell silent when coasting.
A re-conditioned cog-box fixed it, but not cheaply.
All the best with it, and of course have a word or three with your local dealer to confirm.
Should not be a great deal, as they drop out easily, and put back in in a matter of a week - tops.
Bob.
