I was wondering how effective an online degree as a motorcycle tech. would be in getting a job at a dealership

The only hands on i would have would be with my own bikes.The schools name is penn foster they claim to be acredited school.

I am also considering the same course you are, but only to help me to understand more of what to do for general maintenance of my bike. Because there won't be actual hands on technical training like you would receive from a specialty school or technical institute, I don't think you will get the experience to get a job as a mechanic. Have you check into any technical training schools? Penn Foster is courses done at your own pace and is mostly informational training and not much in the area of technical skills. You may even try speaking to a local shop and see if you can get a job as an apprentice while you take this course so you can get the experience needed.

Well, it would help, of course it would mostly depend on you.
BUT, trust me on this one, there are certainly better, easier, higher paying, more benefitted, cleaner, (i could go on) jobs out there to be had. I love bikes and I was a good mechanic, but, if I could do it all over again I SURE AS HELL WOULD HAVE FOUND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO.

if you do take pics of all your work you do on the bikes during the whole project as to the engine tear down to reassemble make a step by step pic gallery. to show that you have taken a motor apart. and it runs great after its together. all shops want proof of hands on repair work. before they hire.

Would you let a doctor with an online degree operate on you? I really don't see how you can learn to work on a motorcycle correctly from an online degree. You would be better off just finding a bike shop that would let you work as an apprentice for little or no money. That is still cheaper than paying for a school. I agree with geo that if you plan to pay for schooling you can make a better career decision than being a motorcycle mechanic...sorry but he is right on this one.
