The battery will be marked as to what voltage it is and you can use a 6/12V car battery charge on low or trickle charge. Don't use boost, you'll fry the battery. Before you do charge the battery borrow a multimeter from a friend and check the battery voltage 12.5 to 14.4V is reasonable for a healthy-ish battery. I suspect you are more likely to have an earthing problem or a fuse problem that is causing the fuel guage/indicator problem. Also, invest in a Haynes Manual. Their troubleshooting sections are quite good these days.

Yes, ok as a get you started fix. Don't try and do a full charge though as a car charger will push out more current than the m/c battery will take when full.
