Question:
I am trying to buy my first bike!
i was looking through this 'yahoo ask' forum (great resoure)
and finally choose to buy used honda shadow VLX 600
it was either used sportster or V star
but i see that honda is best on reliability.
Any advise you guy can give me before i buy will be GREAT!

I guess it depends on your comfort,age and the mission of the bike. For just putting around town and a weekend ride, the Shadow is a nice bike. Look at the Shadow 750 cc too. As my mechanic said to me like airplanes, bigger is better. The larger engines are more reliable and are not put under as much duress. The 750 is liquid cooled as well as air cooled..I just purchased a cousin of this bike this summer and I looked at the Shadow really close... but my mission was I wanted a touring style bike. I ended up buying a Honda PC800 (Pacific Coast) They quit making them in 1998 or 99. It has a trunk and looks like a "mini-me" of the ST1300. What I like about it is it has the rider protected from rocks and wind blast is comfortable behind the wind screen. I also like the idea that the windscreen is attached to the bike frame and not the front fork. When I pass a truck, it does not act like a sail to try to change the direction of the bike. It is a bit heavier than the Shadow.. about 650 lbs but it is agile in the turns yet a dream on the freeway. You can pick them up for arount $3,000 - 4,000.
Whatever you decide to buy.... like airplanes, anything that flys is neat.... think about what kind of riding you plan to do, how comfortable you feel when stopped at a light to control the weight, your leg reach to the ground, visibility by you and visibility to others. Most important of all take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course and learn how to ride defensively because in a contest between you and a car, the car is gonna win. They will teach you things you really don't want to have a learning curve on the road when their instruction can save you a very bad day.

Well VLX600 only have 4 gear ratio... :(I am same height as you and Bought 750shadow spirit, weights 500lbs, and love it.
but I prefer new 'cuz easy to get financed then older bike. MY insurance cost w/full coverage $270.00 for 1yr...with Progressive....

That will fit you really well.I had one of those for a couple years.
I think maybe you need to have a shop adjust the valves unless you are a fair mechanic, and other than that they are simple maintenance.
