I have heard that you can knock out the baffles of stock mufflers to increase or improve the sound. Can this be done and are there any problems or recommendations if doing that.

The short answer is yes you can. You need to get a hole saw and cut out the baffle from the rear side of the muffler which you need to remove. You will have to do alot of banging and punching with long drifts and chisels to free up the front section of the baffle. What that will leave you with is essentially drag pipes (which are way too loud) and attract the law which may ticket you for excessive noise. There are many aftermarket mufflers that you can buy which are reasonable and are a much smarter choice for riding on the street. I see used pipes on ebay all the time that are cheap. Remember when you run drag pipes you no longer have any back pressure back to the heads and a stock H/D is not designed to run like that. You'll make a ton of noise and your scooter will run like crap. If your injected you will need to remap if you choose drag pipes. If your injected and buy a set of replacement mufflers that are baffled and do nothing else you'll probably get away with the stock map configuration. If the motor is popping and backfiring through the exhaust you'll need to remap. If your are carbureted and you go with drag pipes you'll need to rejet. I personally suggest the Thunder Slide kit. It comes with the needles and a new lighter slide for better throttle response. If your comfortable with taking apart a carb it's a snap and I've used them numerous times with zero problems. If your carbureted and you choose replacement mufflers it will be the same as injected models, ride it and see how it performs. You may not need to rejet. In either case keep an eye on your spark plugs for a few hundred miles. Read them to see if your running too rich or lean. As a side note if your changing the exhaust you might as well change to a free flow intake to get better performance. They work hand in hand. Good luck too you!Need some help from guys please?
You will need to re-jet the carb or re-map the fuel injection. A freer flowing exhaust will cause your motor to run leaner. This could lead to burned valves or pistons. Why don't you just get yourself an inexpensive pair of slip on mufflers instead of trashing the stock ones ?Why are lock washers important?

yes you can if you don't have EFI if it is a carb you can knock out the baffles and go to any bike shop and get power cones. they go in the end of your pipes and give you back pressure so it still runs good and its not that loud. but if your careful taking out baffles and its to loud for you cut the baffles in half and reinstall the half.but if you have EFI your screwed you have to get your chip re-programed every time ya change anything like that.More Questions & Answers ...
