A few years back I had a Suzuki GS550. I loved that bike in a way I could never quite love a woman! Until I crashed it, that is!! I kept the bike for a year after the crash, and it was never quite the same, mainly as a result of having bent the frame. It would fall into right hand bends like a super-trick sports bike, but trying to get it round left-handers was like trying to tack a yacht into the wind!If you can get the frame checked out to ensure it hasn't been bent and it comes out clean, go for it. If in any doubt, take it from a man lucky to be alive, walk away!!
If you want to buy a Yamaha Diversion 900 for an entirely reasonable price, please get in touch!! This one hasn't been bent, I assure you!

Bikes like Suzuki Bandits are usually past it if the frames bent. You can buy cat c repaired bikes cheaper from places like Taz motorcycles in peterborough. If you're after a project check MCN and they list salvage and breakers in the classifieds. Which is probably your best bet. There are many bikes with little damage and are considered totaled, Sportbike particularly. A total is usually the repairs exceed 50% of the bikes value. If a sport bikes plastics along with some other parts are damage it can quickly get over 50% due to the high cost of replacement plastics. If the frame has the slightest scratch in it, the bike is totaled.

FYI - While at the auctions you will see people paying as high as 3k for a frame. Why would anyone pay that much for a frame you ask? These people are usually bike thieves. They steal a bike, then buy a frame, put all the parts on the new frame and sell the bike with title and all.

A lot of these bikes are cosmetic write offs, fairing or bodywork parts are unobtainable for older bikes so they cannot be repaired to pre accident condition so have to be written off.If you are happy to ride a non standard bike or want to have a custom bike a write off is an ideal starting point but you will be unable to check the froame for damage until you get it home and bent frames mean odd handling, like pulling to one side constantly, or steering differently left to right, as a general rule, across the frame 4s etc should steer dead straight hands off even when braking with the rear brake, if it does not get a new frame, straightening is rarely sucessful and weakens the frame.
