I always park mine up on the sidewalk and find a post to cable it to. If there is no post, then a cable through the front wheel. Try to stay away from high traffic pedestrian areas so kids don't sit on your bike, but don't park in completely low traffic areas either. I always cover mine even when going to the mall. Try to get a place near security cameras too.They are always near entrances. Thieves stay clear of these areas.

Lock it up adequately. Pay a premium for good quality chains and put through both wheels and body to a concrete or thick metal cable. However, I would get some really good insurance because it may prove valuable in the long run. If you don't want to do that, get a rat bike.

depends on which mall, what city, what country and regioni always park in the yellow stripes section at the end of the car parking areas, as close to the door of the entrance possible. this keeps cars from nailing me and is right out front for all to see and harder to steal.

My bike is never parked .it is left waiting.I do use an alarmed lock that clips through the brake disc holes and has a 120 dB alarm if the bike moves. I can also get this to ring my mobile phone of it goes off.
I also use a wire rope lock on occasions if the bike will be left in a more secluded area and usually attach it to a pole or somesuch.

I park my bike in the yellow stripe area at the end of the parking row closest to the main mall entrance. This is in a very visible location but at the same time, with lots of people around, a thief may find it less desirable to try something. For added piece of mind you could get an alarm and /or lock. As a previous response said, if they really want it they'll get it. All we can do is make it as difficult for them as possible.
