Protection wise as long as they have the DOT sticker, they're all the same. When you start adding in luxuries like vents, helmet mirrors, padding, noise deadening, etc, I believe Arai is the best mainstream helmet maker. all helmets are not the same because they have the dot sticker that just means they met the minimum requirements Arai are the best protecting best venting and best fitting helmet. I have worn kbc,hjc,agv,shoei and soumy and nothing has been close to my Rx7 corsair arai i used to get hot spots in the others and then start itching and with 10000 miles in my arai i have had none of that. The best at any price is Shoei or Arai. In my opinion the best for the buck is HJC. i all ways bought AGV , but there are SUOMY, ARAI,SHARK. i wear arai and hjc hjc is a lower cost but the arai is more comfortable "spend as much on a helmet as you think your head is worth"full face lids would offer more protection than the 3/4 or 1/2 shells. downside to the full face is, in the summer, they get pretty hot. keep in mind that a crash as low as 15 mph can kill u just as easy as a crash at 100. i recently heard about a lid-less vespa scooter rider dumping his scoot at 10 mph, and his head hit a fire hydrant. rider didnt make it.
on a biker board i haunt, 1 member's friends smacked into a deer on a crotch rocket at a pretty good clip. he hit that deer so hard he actually caused his full face helmet to crack in 2 places. he sustained massive injuries tho..he didnt survive for more than a few months, but the consensus was that had he hit the deer lid free, they most likely would have had a hard time identifying him.
I agree with others here - Arai, Shoei, Suomy, these usually come out on top in the most stringent testing.
One huge factor in helmet safety is fit. I properly fitted helmet will protect you better.

Depends if it is full face or not. I wear a Harley davidson half helmet(DOT approved) and I like it a lot. They also make full face helmets. Any helmet that is DOT approved and is comfortable is alright. Appearance means a lot to me so I go with a top of the line helmet.The best helmet is the one god or your mother gave you

I say Shoei.The best helmet is one with DOT/SNELL approval, that fits your head. No single make fits everyone. Suggest that you visit dealers, and try on as many different models as you can. Remember that sizes vary between manufacturers.
