After 30 years in the motorcycle industry, I have to concur with the other folks on here. Right now the M/C industry is in a depression. Most dealerships sales are off as much as 60%. There are bright spots, and exceptions around the country, but few and far between. It does not matter what brand or how many dealerships they own, there are a lot of dealers who would be glad to sell. The used market is flooded, especially with Harley Davidsons. Go on line and look. The manufactures are pumping out more bikes than the market needs right now, and the warehouses are full of unsold new 05, and 06 models, and the 07 models are coming out now. I know of Harley Dealers who are discounting models , and knocking off the freight and set up, normally a nice profit center for the dealer , to move the non currents. Actually they (H.D.) is increasing exports to China to eliminate the back log of unsold bikes. With the deflation of real estate values in most areas of the country, and all the ARM mtgs. coming due, the refinance money that drove the market the last 5 years is gone. I work selling bikes in a multi line dealership, and H..D. , Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, and Buell. I know that the Christmas season is starting out like the last 9 months, slow. With all this negative information, I would think that you could find a dealership for sale. Of course be prepared to pay an over inflated price, and then try and qualify with the factories. Wait about another months, I think there will be a lot of stores for sale, at a more realistic price. . I understand that you did not ask for all this seemingly unrelated information. I just feel you should be aware of where the industry is right now. I personally know a soon to be ex dealer who invested 2 million in a small, but previously very profitable store, that is currently losing around $50 K per month. Good Luck.At this point, there probably isn't a motorcycle shop in the country that isn't for sale. Even if it isn't actively being marketed, it can probably be bought.
The O.E.M. will set all the parameters for the new owner, outside the asking/buying price, so the best thing to do is to start with your areas dealer rep and see where that takes you.
