Middle Age Guy, Last bike owned 25 years ago (Honda CB 350), short excursions thru Mountains and Deserts, (maybe occassional overnight tours) Wants to keep funds down for first purchase. Narrowing down search to these two lines of bikes.

I would take the Vulcan over the Boulevard. I've ridden the Kawasaki and found it to be quite peppy and smooth. I like the bigger model Boulevards but I'm not fond of the 40. You might also look at a Honda VLX (600cc).You might want to check out the Buell Blast. It is comparable in price and displacement to the bikes you are looking at and is a better performing bike all round. Harley dealers usually carry them. Worth a test drive to find out.

It sounds like you want an economical cruiser style bike, so either of those shouled be fine. I'd probably go for a used Honda Magna or Shadow Ace 750 myself, because the engine is better, but you should be okay with either the Kaw or Suzuki. Note, I hope you are not planning on taking a passenger or alot of gear. Check the gas tank sizes. A two gallon tank will take you only about 100 miles. Keep an eye on that when you go up into the mountains or into the desert.More Questions & Answers ...
