If you are willing to take a trip to one of the larger book stores,they will have a fair number of coffee table books, history of Harley Davidson etc. They are full of photos,I think that is what I would do.

You can find the decals for any year HD at jpcycles.com I think they sell the owner"s manual for any year HD which should have the colors, if not check for them at your local HD dealer,Good Luck

I think the original paint code for the bike is incorporated into the VIN/SN. On a '78 it should be on the frame tube, right side as you sit on the bike, just below the steering head..

they were limited in the color variety, get on
harley davidson or drop a note or visit your local harley shop they can look it up im sure.
harley has a history site cause i have looked through it several times,and likely you can find the factory manuals for it on e-bay also.
the color scheme was limited, as was my factory custom it came with engine work just not custom color,so getting a factory manual is almost impossible.
also some paint manufacturers wil have factory paint scheme for the type and issued year also, they got the paint for them from some where right?
