As to the loud pipe saves lives response. Come ride in our congested area and tell me that principal doesn't apply. I agree it is pointless in an oncoming situation. However when soccer mom is on the phone or dude is jamming to his favorite tune do you think they know your along side of them? I sure don't. I don't care for obnoxious pipes myself as it gives me a headache after a few hours in the saddle but while in traffic they sure help.

My older brother had a harley, and every morning like 5am he would go out and start it up. Come back inside finish his brekkie, and when he left he would take off down the drive-way...I mean 5am ppl r still asleep till he leaves for work. I, too, used to think that the "loud pipes save lives" line was nothing but crap, but that was before the loud pipes on my wife's bike literally saved my butt. At the time we both had Suzuki Marauders, and she got her pipes changed out to loud onese before I did. I was riding her bike in to work one morning, traffic on Rt 15 in northern New Jersey was heavy, I was in the left lane of the two-lane road rolling along at about 20 MPH when the lady in the minivan next to me decided to change lanes without looking. She was too busy yapping on her cell phone at the time. I dumped the clutch and revved the bike; the roar of the pipes startled her so much that she dropped the phone as she swerved back into her own lane. She looked over at me with a surprised look on her face, and I could see her saying "I didn't see you!" behind the glass of her window.

I've been riding for over 35 years both stock, and custom bikes. Lets be honest, you can be as considerate or as annoying as you want to be when you go by someones house.I'm sure most if not all of you have EXTRA loud exhaust systems. It dosen't take much to keep things toned down until you get past the guys house. Certain sounds/frequencies affect people in different ways. The elderly can be almost deaf to some sounds and totaly annoyed by others.
Give the guy a break, invite to go for coffe or something. Be nice, that takes alot less effort. Then you can get out in the open and rev until you blow eachothers eardrums out.

You or whoever is running straight pipes is just too loud, even idling. Its one thing to get a slightly better performing set of pipes and something else that wakes the dead. And since you've already been told that you are stepping on the neighbor's right to a peaceful community you probably don't care about that either.
