It really doesn't mean much of anything. All Harley's are pretty much the same, they just have different chrome bits. There's the FL, the FLH, the FLHT, the BLT, the OU812, etc....has anybody had any problems with bricketts for petrol tanks in classic m/bikes?
fl and fx are different frame designs.fx desiginates sport type front end
fl desiginates touring front end
The FL designator has been used since the 1950s, prior to that it was EL's. It was given to the 74ci (1200cc) scoots and still used to this day even with the 95 ci engine. The advent of the FX was introduced with the first Super Glide (boat-tail) in 1970. Back then H-D had two frame types, the FL (Full Dresser, now called by some a bagger) and the XL (Sportster). Willie G wanted something different and thus was born the Super Glide. A Super Glide used the same frame as the Full Dresser........BUT it was equipped with the front trees, forks and wheel assembly of the Sportster.
Now days you can get lost in the alphabet soap and it appears to only be extended with each model year.
Another fact is that H-D has only three (3) main sub-assemblies for all their models and that came about with the soft-tail. The families are now (excluding Buell) are FL, Dyna (soft-tails) an Sportster.
That about covers it. 'Now you know the REST of the story. Paul Harvey.........Good Day!'
